ContessasHome our virtual “selling” site will be reactivated and we will be launching it for browsing at 12 Noon on Monday, February 1, 2021.  We have preserved numerous items from our brick and mortar store in Delray, Contessa’s Garden and Gift, Alexandria, VA. Our items will be selling in best condition and priced according to the current market value. 

Shipping charges will be the responsibility of our buyers. This is standard policy on ETSY.

ETSY is an easy and fun way to purchase treasures without leaving the comfort of your home. We trust you will enjoy shopping our online store. Feedback and questions on our Etsy site are welcome. We are happy to engage your comments and suggestions. This has been a practice we enjoy. It’s always fun to know our customers virtually. Perfect for the life we are all leading during COVID isolation.  All of our items are purchased at local auctions. Our inventory will include, what is known in the business as “vintage smalls.”  And we will sell restored lamps/lighting, art, mirrors, “classic” hardcover books, silver, home decor and garden decor. We also have small/petite vintage furniture in our inventory.

Reviving/Creating Weed Free Beds

Our current gardening project required some work in our clients “garden beds.”  This client likes leaving the late Fall leaves in their beds. They like to encourage a habitat for bugs, crawling creatures, larvae and in general, providing a blanket for these species. It’s a great idea actually if you can deal with looking at very full leafy beds all winter. But in the spring with all the wind and rain your yard and your beds start producing WEEDS. Impossible to get at them under all the winter “cover.”  So they hired me to clean up the yard and the beds.

So here’s my recipe for weed free beds:

Collect black and white newspaper. Quite a lot actually.  Purchase ordinary topsoil, about $3.00 per bag.  Then rake and weed your beds. Now place the newspaper down, a couple pieces thick. Then cover the newspaper with a generous amount of topsoil. One inch thick if you have enough. Press down with your garden goulashes. Wait two weeks. Magically the carbon in the newspaper combined with the deep dark and organic rich topsoil will give you new beds/ with no weeds, and no new weeds for a very long time. And when you go to plant or dig it’s magic. You will discover that there are no new weeds at all, and your newspaper has disappeared.

Plant Stand, Wrought Iron

Vintage Wrought Iron Plant Stand

Vintage Wrought Iron Plant Stand, Circa 1940. Wonderful with a large Boston Fern inside. Line the vessel with moss and you are good to go. We found this one in Harwich on Cape Cod. It’s off-white and rust distressed. It stands. 40 1/2″ and us 14″ square at the base. The round basket-like top is 16″ deep  and 14″ across. You could paint it if you wish, but we think the weathered look “as is” simply fits the piece.  The wind will not blow this one over. It’s very sturdy and about 10 pounds.
